From stunning art collections and fascination exhibitions, to medieval crafts and Potter-inspired magic – a visit to Alnwick Castle inspires the imagination.

Fun at Alnwick Castle

One of the largest inhabited castles in Europe, Alnwick has been home to the Duke of Northumberland’s family, the Percys, through 700 years of drama, intrigue, tragedy and romance.

Behind its iconic walls lie opulent State Rooms filled with one of the country’s finest private art collections, featuring work by Canaletto, Titian, and Van Dyck and a beautiful gallery of Meissen, Chelsea and Paris porcelain.

Don’t forget to explore the cabinets of curiosities in the 1st Duchess Collection, an exhibition filled with unusual items meticulously collected by the 1st Duchess of Northumberland – including a pair of gloves belonging to Elizabeth I – accompanied by a film from eminent art historian, Adriano Aymonino.

Step outside into the castle’s magnificent grounds to admire the architecture and join a guide to learn the tales of over 700 years of history and behind-the-scenes anecdotes from the castle’s glittering film roles – most famously featuring as Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in the Harry Potter films.

There is plenty to entertain the whole family at the castle – budding knights and princesses can join the costumed characters of the castle and dress up in medieval finery in the Knight’s Quest arena, and try their hand at free traditional crafts, swordplay and medieval games. Only the most courageous should then brave the darkness of Dragon Quest and come face-to-face with Northumberland’s fearsome dragon.

Alnwick also has an exciting programme of seasonal events which are free with admission, including visits from the Potter-inspired characters, master falconers, and fire-breathing jesters – not to mention daily tours and the infamous broomstick training sessions!
