Family Summer Events at Abbey Pumping Station

22nd June 2013

The Abbey Pumping Station hosts a series of family friendly events throughout the summer months. From railway days involving fancy dress to vintage festivals see what they have in store.

Abbey Pumping Station

Leicester’s Vintage Festival

Saturday 22nd June 2013 1.00pm – 5.00pm & Sunday 23rd June 2013 12.00noon – 5.00pm
Admission: Adults £3.50; Accompanied children: Free
(Small charge for train rides).

This two day event celebrates our past; with the sights and sounds of steam and vintage vehicles along with live music, craft stalls and a ride on the museum’s narrow gauge railway behind “Lenny” our resident steam locomotive. Visitors are welcome to wear period costume, be it Victorian to 1960s hippies.

Throughout the weekend the massive beam engines will be operating in turn, culminating in a spectacular sight at 3.30 pm when three of the mighty Gimson beam engines will be steamed together. This is possibly the only place in the world where such a wonder can be seen. The LMTA café will be open both days serving refreshments.

Railway Gala Day

Saturday 6th July 2013 11.00am – 4.30pm
Admission Free.
(Small charge for train rides).

Why not come down and ride on the only public Narrow Gauge Railway in Leicestershire? Ride behind Leonard the Bagnall steam loco and then enjoy the experience of riding behind the other four internal combustion locos resident at the Pumping Station. All day ride tickets will be available plus the launch of our Railway Guide book. After all this excitement you can have a cuppa and a cake at our own cafe in the main building, or enjoy your own picnic in the museum’s grounds.

Feather Headdresses and Dream Catchers

Tuesday 23rd July 2013 11.00am-3.00pm

You’ll have sweet dreams after you’ve made your Dream Catcher to hang in your room to ward off nightmares, or you make yourself a fancy Native American headdress. Then follow a themed trail round the museum. Refreshments available.

Animal Rescue Railway Day

Saturday 3rd August 2013 11.00am-4.30pm
Admission: Free.
(Small charge for train rides).

Go wild at Abbey Pumping Station by dressing up as your favourite animal and taking a trip on our train. Support your local animal charities and learn more about the work that they do. Go on an animal hunt around the museum and take part in some animal themed crafts. Refreshments available.

Frog Prince & Princesses

Tuesday 20th August 2013 11.00am-3.00pm
Admission free; £2 for activities
Why not come along dressed as a prince or princess. Learn the story of the Frog Prince, and make a frog puppet and princess. Then see how many amphibious friends you can find in the museum. Refreshments available.

Seaside Special Steam Day

Sunday 8th September 2013 1.00pm – 5.00pm
Admission: Adults £3.50; Children/Concession £2.50; Family £8.00
(Small charge for train rides, fairground and donkey rides).

Back by popular request; join us for our 5th seaside day at the Abbey Pumping Station. Enjoy the Sun, Sea & Sand once again, bring your swimsuit and join us on the museum’s beach or relax in a deck chair while the children build sand castles. Enjoy all the sights and sounds of a traditional day at the seaside, complete with fairground rides, without the travelling!

Take a trip on our steam railway or ride on a donkey. Meet up with Punch & Judy and view the museum’s massive working beam engines, then enjoy the refreshments in the ever-popular Beach Cafe outside and the Museum Cafe indoors. As an added bonus, the Leicester Transport Heritage Trust will be running vintage bus passenger services from outside the site.
