Westcountry to World’s End: The South West in the Tudor Age

RAMM is celebrating the spirit of adventure and enterprise of South West people in a landmark exhibition exploring the West Country in the age of the Tudors. Comprising loans from the Bodleian Library, British Library, British Museum, National Portrait Gallery, National Trust, Royal Collection, Royal Museums Greenwich, Victoria & Albert Museum and private lenders, it will present a compelling account of the remarkable contributions of individuals from the South West from 1540 to 1620.

This display includes works by major artists of both the 19th and 20th centuries. It features drawings by Barbara Hepworth, watercolours by Thomas Girtin, Francis Towne and John White Abbott and paintings by Alan Cotton and Brian Rice.

Land and seascapes; antiquities and historic buildings; composite topographical townscapes; and monumental figures and book illustrations from four contemporary South West wood engravers: Harry Brockway, Hilary Paynter, Pam Pebworth and Howard Phipps.

RAMM is delighted to be presenting the work of Gilbert & George as part of the national ARTIST ROOMS programme in 2014. Gilbert & George are among the most celebrated artists to have emerged from the British art scene in the late 1960s.
ARTIST ROOMS On Tour is a partnership with Arts Council England and the Art Fund, making available the ARTIST ROOMS collection of international modern and contemporary art to galleries throughout the UK. ARTIST ROOMS is jointly owned by Tate and the National Galleries of Scotland and was established through The d’Offay Donation in 2008, with the assistance of the National Heritage Memorial Fund, the Art Fund, and the Scottish and British Governments.

Objects from the Wellcome Collection relating to human sexuality in all its forms: The variety of attitudes and cultural practices embodied by this display prompts us to question our own attitudes towards such contemporary issues as censorship and display, the boundaries between childhood and adulthood, control of sexuality, fertility and contraception, pleasure and power relations. It asks our audiences to open up their minds and to reflect of the value and significance of sex to us today.

The 14 categories, including Botanical Britain, Young People’s Awards, Coast and marine and Wildlife in HD Video, are inspiring, thought provoking and highlight the natural wonders right on our doorsteps. Subjects range from familiar favourites to rare and elusive floral and faunal gems.
